Vineyard HistoryBy vineyard owner Dr. Tom Tarpley
Chardonnay vines on so4 root stock were ordered from The Niagara Region of New York State about fourteen years ago. Before preparing the one acre site we learned that the ordered vines had been destroyed by sprays from a near by location. The land was plowed and disked several times and remaining alfalfa plants were dug out by hand. My wife joined me in removing rocks and stones. A post and trellis system was decided on and installed a year ahead of the arrival of the vines. Several modifications have subsequently been done. The vines arrived and were all hand planted the following year. Appropriate weather allowed growth without loss the first couple of years. Neighboring farmers did their best to stunt the early growth with liberal applications of 2,4-D and its associated drift. The first harvest at 3 years was approximately 50 pounds. The largest harvest yield to date is 1 and 3/4 tons. Birds are one of the largest vineyard pests. The most fruit on the vines were consumed in an afternoon feeding frenzy by Starlings and Cowbirds. An estimated two plus tons was present prior to the visitation. Netting was and is the answer for the birds. Balloons and other gadgets were not effective. Powdery mildew has been a constant problem, especially in hot and humid conditions. The vines are now fully mature and produce a quality fruit. Patricia and I are happy to share our expertise with those interested in growing grapes and managing a vineyard. This is why we now offer our vineyard as a teaching/learning tool for entrepreneurs and future winegrowers. Copyright © 2003 Hidden Spring Farm |
